The fourth period computer science class at Greensboro Middle School has won the Most Creative Award in the national Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition. The class, led by teacher Myra Harris, put together a proposal that addresses two problems: car pollution and the gas tax that is essential for the upkeep and repairs on Alabama’s roads. Using the scientific method, the class made a video for the national competition. The students outlined the catch-22 nature of the problem first: more cars means more pollution but more gas taxes, which are used to improve state roads. With more electric cars being sold every year there is less air pollution, but also less money for road improvement.

The class hypothesized that a small fee for the use of Alabama’s 276 public EV charging stations would replace the money lost on gas tax and supply necessary revenue for roadwork.

An expansion of the public transportation system would also curb emissions. More roads, buses, and expanded routes, along with easier access and discounts for passengers, would reduce the number of cars on the road. In conclusion the students stressed the need for cleaner air, less traffic, and better roads.

The Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition invites middle school students to propose innovative solutions to real world sustainable transportation problems by using STEM.
