Oakwood Cemetery Association is pleased to announce that thanks to a grant from Black Belt Community Foundation, they will begin phase one of a project to digitize Oakwood Cemetery and Oakwood Martin Cemetery maps and data.
“We are very grateful to Black Belt Community Foundation for this opportunity,” said Oakwood Cemetery Association president Stephen “Buzzy” Barnette. “In the past we have had to rely on hand drawn maps and records kept on paper.
Although this has served us well through the years, methods need to be updated for easier, faster grave locating and information retrieval. With this project, Oakwood Cemetery Association hopes to be a model to other cemeteries in the Black Belt that may be looking to computerize their record keeping for future generations. Phase one is expected to be finished this spring by surveyor Robert Hoggle.
