A bill has been introduced in the Alabama Legislature that would significantly expand the boundaries of the Town of Newbern, annexing hundreds of acres of land on both the north and south ends of the current town limits.
The proposed legislation, which will be advertised over the next four weeks in The Greensboro Watchman, would extend Newbern’s town limits roughly 1.7 miles north and 0.75 miles south along Alabama Highway 61. The expansion would include numerous properties and rights-ofway, as well as parcels situated along Big Prairie Creek and Whitsitt Creek.
If passed, the bill would bring dozens of new parcels—ranging from residential lots to large tracts of farmland and forest—into the town’s corporate limits. The newly annexed land includes parts of Sections 13, 14, 23, 24, 26, 35, and 36 in Township 19 North, Range 5 East of Hale County. The legal notice describing the annexation spans several pages and contains hundreds of legal descriptions of properties that would fall under town governance if the bill is approved. A map outlining the proposed new boundaries has been filed in the office of the Hale County Judge of Probate.
The bill does not remove any land from the town’s limits but adds to them on both sides, further incorporating areas along key roads like County Road 48, County Road 16, and several smaller roads that feed into Newbern.
The proposed expansion would bring into town numerous properties along the southern portion of Highway 61, near Big Prairie Creek, and additional territory to the north extending toward Whitsitt Creek. These areas include both improved lots with homes and outbuildings as well as undeveloped and agricultural lands.
As with all local annexation legislation, the proposed bill will need to be passed by both chambers of the Alabama Legislature and signed by the governor to become law.
