The performance of a locally written, locally produced, and locally performed play, “The Phantom of the Greensboro Opera House,” will mark the conclusion of the Opera House’s “Encore 2023” anniversary celebration and the start of its 2024-25 season. The performance will be on Sunday, September 15th at 6:30, with a reception to follow.

The play was written by the President of Greensboro Opera House, Inc., Winnie Cobbs, in collaboration by members of the cast. As is a fitting finale to the anniversary celebration, “The Phantom of the Greensboro Opera House,” recounts the history of the Opera House, but in the form of a hilarious, farcical dramatization, packed not only with laughter, but also with a mixture of historical fact and anecdote.

As the play unfolds, the historian of the Opera House is giving an anniversary lecture on its history, when she is unexpectedly joined by the “Phantom,” Jeffries A. Blunt, the Opera House’s builder, now long-dead, and he is then in turn joined by various other phantoms from the past. The play stars Eve Engle Kneeland and Glen Johnson, who are supported by cameo performances by a cast of local residents.

Admission is $10, students free. A limited number of tickets can be purchased in advance at the Partridge Berry and at Alabama Insurance, and tickets can also be purchased at the door on the night of the performance— with all tickets to be paid for in cash or by check. The doors will open at 5:30.

This performance will be followed on October 20 at 3:00 by a Jazz concert by “Ken and Friends,” on November 10 at 3:00 by Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist from Nashville Melody Guy, and in December by a community- wide musical “A Celebration of Christmas.” Additional events scheduled in the New Year will be announced when details are finalized.

“The Phantom of the Greensboro Opera House” has been made possible in part by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
