The City of Greensboro has officially moved forward with legal action against the Third Street Church of God and its pastor, Kervin Jones, regarding the operation of a transitional/ halfway house at 410 Main Street. This action comes after the Greensboro City Council voted on August 13 to pursue legal measures, citing zoning violations and public safety concerns.
The lawsuit, filed in the Circuit Court of Hale County, seeks a declaratory judgment and an injunction to stop the church from operating the transitional facility in an R-1 residential district without the necessary zoning approvals. The city’s complaint emphasizes that the church opened the halfway house earlier this year despite being denied a rezoning request by the council, arguing that this use of the property violates local zoning laws and poses potential risks to the community.
On August 22, 2024, the court scheduled a hearing for the city’s motion for a preliminary injunction. The hearing is set for September 13, 2024, at 9:00 AM. The city is requesting both a preliminary and permanent injunction to prevent the continued operation of the facility at this location.
