John Henry Mitchell, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Greensboro, AL on May 30, 2024. He was born on June 10, 1935 in Greensboro Alabama and was a proud graduate of Greensboro High School class of 1957. During those high school years is when he met the love of his life and became “daddy doll” for 64 years to the late Frances J. Mitchell, of Greensboro, AL.

Throughout his journey of life he had many accomplishments and his hardworking, kindness, and generous outreach touched countless individuals. He dedicated his life to Christ and proclaimed his love through baptism on July 21, 1968.

At an early age you could catch John running a tractor, milking cows, or raising hunting dogs on the Mitchell Dairy Farm in Hale County all while becoming an Honorary Member of the Senate (1971-1975), Honorary Admiral of the Alabama Navy (1973), and Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aid-De-Camp Alabama State Militia (1971). When he wasn’t making a living for his family you could find him writing witty, poetic publications in the Greensboro Watchman. During his mid to later years, Greensboro Lions Park, The Little Prairie Kitchen, or John Henry’s BBQ was where you could find him cooking and serving his community. Oh, how John so loved serving the kids of his hometown.

Out of all his life’s accomplishments his greatest treasure was found with his family. He is preceded in death by his loving bride, Frances J. Mitchell; son, Johnny Mitchell; parents Thomas A and Arie P Mitchell; his sisters Ozeal Bohannon, Ora Casaday, Ila Burchfield, and Lila Clark; and his brothers Felton Mitchell, Linden Mitchell, Curtis Mitchell, Wallace Mitchell, and Harold Mitchell.

He is survived by his three daughters Vickie Ford (Jeff Ford), Stephanie Elmore (Terry Elmore), and ReRe Osmer; grandchildren, Mitchell Milam (Miranda), Tara Moore (Tom), Codi Espy (Collins), Michael Milam (Harley), Savanna Evans (Hunter) and Michael Grace Patterson (Dakota); great grandchildren, Madison Milam, Matthew Milam, Jakob Stone, Mason Milam, Kinzlee Milam, Emma Milam, Marlee Milam, Colton Milam, Catherine Espy, and Caroline Espy, and a herd of nieces and nephews.

He was laid to rest at Oakwood cemetery in Greensboro, AL on Monday June 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM. The service was officiated by Dakota Patterson. Pallbearers were Michael Milam, Mitchell Milam, Terry Elmore, Finley James, Chris Clinton, Hunter Evans. Honorary pallbearers were Jeff Rinehart, Justin Combs, Collins Espy, Tom Moore, Phillip Milam, and Southern Comfort Care.
