Bernice H. Eppes, aged 83, entered into eternal rest on March 28, 2024. Her passing was announced with great sadness, as she was surrounded by her children and is remembered for being deeply loved by all who knew her. Bernice was predeceased by her husband, James Eppes, her parents, her sister Dorothy Hinton Hamilton, her sister Mary Belton, and her brothers Donald Lee Hinton and Abram Hinton, Jr.
At a young age, Sister Bernice professed her faith in Christ at the First Baptist Church in Akron. She dedicated many years as an usher on the Usher Board and was a faithful and devoted member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
Sister Bernice received her education at Hale County Training School and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Math Education from Stillman College. She retired in 1997 as a high school math educator from the Hale County Board of Education after a notable 34-year career. Mrs. Eppes was renowned for her love of sewing, baking, and sharing her caramel cakes, cupcakes, and teacakes with others.
She is survived by her four daughters: Starwanthia (Tony) Lee, Shalandra (William) Martian, Shatonya (Taurus) Blackmon, and Shatanya (Johnney) Ford; grandchildren: Aeriel (Danny) Coleman and Aaron Lee, Orienne and Omar Lewis; Ivy Eppes and Iya Ford; and her loving sister, Dorsenia Thomas of Greensboro, AL. Her family also includes her brother-inlaw, Johnny (Bettye) Eppes of Ypsilanti, MI; sisters-inlaw Mary Eppes of Tuscaloosa, AL, Lois (Tommy) Furlow of Chicago, IL, Lealia Marks, Jean Eppes, Helen Eppes, Love V. Eppes, and Mae Francis Eppes, alongside a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 5, 2024, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 P.M. at the Agnew Funeral Home Chapel located at 1110 Baptist Hill, Greensboro, AL 46744. The Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at the Bass Tabernacle CME Church in Akron, AL, followed by interment in the Thomas Family Cemetery at 1741 County Road 85, Greensboro, AL.
Pastor Farrell Caddell will officiate the service, and a repast will follow at the Star of Bethlehem C.M.E. Church at 32888 AL-69, Moundville, AL 36744. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Bernice H. Eppes Education Scholarship Fund at the Bank of Moundville, P.O. Box 158, Moundville, AL 35474.
