Greensboro Farmers’ Co-Op celebrating 50 years Friday, April 7

Special event planned with food trucks, vendors, and more

Next Friday, April 7, Greensboro Farmers’ Co- Op will celebrate 50 years of serving farmers, ranchers, and families in Hale County and the surrounding area. The Co-Op will hold its annual Spring Day/Customer Appreciation Day event beginning at 6:00 a.m. on that day. In addition to the Co-op’s usual Spring Day sales and offerings, there will be local vendors on hand, as well as informational booths manned by Co-op suppliers and partners.

Food vendors will abound, including Blake’s Crawfish, M&M Mustang On Wheels, Sno Blizzy, and the SouthFresh Food truck. In addition, the Co-Op will host a live broadcast by well-known disc jockeys Steve and DC from FM 95.3 The Bear.

Employees at the Co-Op have been preparing for this special event for months, and hope you will come help them celebrate half a century of being your hometown supplier for your farm and garden needs, and more.

Fifty years ago, the Watchman announced the opening of the Co-Op in its Thursday, March 29, 1976 edition as follows: “FARMERS’ COOPERATIVE WILL OPEN HERE APRIL 1

An announcement was made this week by J.A. Kyser that a farmers’ cooperative will open for business beginning Monday, April 2. Kyser told the Watchman that the new business will open under the name of Greensboro Farmers’ Cooperative and that L.B. “Mutt” Kirk will be the manager of the farm store which is open in the building presently occupied by Kirk and Son Milling Company, in the Greensboro Warehouse building at the Depot.

Construction of a new building on the Sawyerville highway will soon begin and will house the new business.

It has also been learned that the cooperative will offer a complete line of farm seed, feed, fertilizer and a full line of garden supplies and farm supplies.”
