Hattie Sampson died Oct. 2 at the age of 83. She was born March 24, 1939 in Greensboro to the late Gus and Louise Bragg who preceded her in death. She attended Hale County Training School in Greensboro. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. Matthew A.M.E. Church in Greensboro, later joining Friendship Baptist Church in Akron. She met and married Frank Sampson and later moved to Pittsburgh, Penn., where she joined Lily Baptist Church. While in Pittsburgh, she worked at McGhee Women’s Hospital. On moving back to Greensboro, she united with St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, where she remained an active member until her death.
Her husband, Frank Sampson, preceded her in death. To this union, four children were born and one child preceded her in death at an early age (Ray Sampson) in Pittsburgh. She leaves to mourn three remaining children, Frank Sampson, Jr. and Theotis Sampson of Pittsburgh and Garnett (Christina) Sampson of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
She was the third of twelve children, with one sister, Vylener Travis, and one brother, Chester Bragg, preceding her in death. Remaining mourners were three brothers, Gus Bragg, Jr. of Mobile, Don (Jean) Bragg of Cleveland and Edgar (Debra) Bragg of Greensboro; six sisters, Josephine Winters of Cleveland, Anne McPherson of Bedrord Heights, Ohio, Willie Mae Hines, Mary Bragg, Franklyn Cannon and Robin Bragg, all of Greensboro; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two very close friends, Dale Johnson and Zeke (Tina) Thomas of Pittsburgh; and a host of other nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 8 at Washington and Paige Chapel in Greensboro with Pastor Stephany Davis Colenberg of St. Matthew A.M.E. Church officiating.
