David “Chief” Wagner, Sr. died July 16 at the age of 61. He was born Sept. 22, 1960 in Marion to the late Rebecca Wagner. He exemplified a connection to the church at an early age, and gave his life to Christ at Rising Star Baptist Church.

He was an alumnus of Greensboro High School, East Campus, from which he graduated with honors in 1978. He was a stellar student and athlete. He continued his education at Alabama A&M University, graduating in 1982 with honors in Agribusiness Education.

He was a vocational educator for 29 years. He was a noteworthy man and a committed spouse, father, and grandfather who was blessed with a loving family. He held a powerful bond with his grandson, Ethan Wagner-Gaines, and sustained this connection through his love for nature, gardening, sports, and education.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Wagner, and brother, Ondre Wagner.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Barbara Williams Wagner; three children, David Wagner, Jr. (Arminica), Ashley Wagner, and Jasmine Wagner- Gaines (DeAndre); grandson, Ethan Wagner-Gaines; brothers, Phillip, Sr. (Mary) and Anthony; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, cousins, students, and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 23 at 11:00 a.m. with Washington and Paige Mortuary directing.
