William Butler “Bill” Walthall of Greensboro died Sunday, March 20 at the age of 75. He was born June 27, 1946 and grew up in the small town of Newbern, which has been home to many generations of the Walthall family.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Laurice Butler Walthall and Thomas Arthur Walthall III, and his nephew, Charles Werth Roberts, III.

He is survived by his sisters, Carolyn Walthall Smith and Frances Walthall Roberts; brother, Thomas A. Walthall IV (Twyla); nieces, Melanie Roberts Germany, Susan Roberts O’Connell, Carol Roberts Roddy, Laurice Claire Smith, and Lynn Smith Parker; nephews, Thomas Arthur Roberts and Thomas Arthur Walthall V; and dear friends, Ann and Phil Langford, Mary Elizabeth Taylor, and Dr. John Dorsey.

He graduated from Auburn University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He lived in Aspen, Colo. following college, then moved back to Newbern and later to Greensboro. He served on the board of Hale County Habitat for Humanity.

Among his pleasures were hosting tours of his hometown and of the Auburn Rural Studio’s projects, which became a tradition for the newly-arrived fellows of Project Horseshoe Farm. He touched many lives with his kind and gentle spirit.
